Survey study, 2017

Is the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool reliable for identifying PMS and PMDD?

Yes. The Portuguese version of the screening tool was reliable and valid for identifying PMS and PMDD. Women who screened positive had worse quality of life scores.

Moderate study design 801 women aged 18 and older in Brazil

What they did

801 women aged 18 and older completed the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool and a quality of life questionnaire. Researchers tested whether the tool was reliable and whether positive screens were linked to real differences in quality of life.

What they found

16.5% screened positive for PMDD. The screening tool had good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.91) and good test-retest reliability. Women with a positive screen for PMS or PMDD had worse quality of life scores.

What it means for you

This screening tool can reliably identify PMS and PMDD in Portuguese-speaking women, and positive results match real differences in how women feel. This was a validation study, not a treatment trial, so it does not show what helps PMS.
