Survey study, 2024

Are difficult family relationships and skin problems linked to PMS?

Women with PMS were much more likely to report bad family relationships than healthy women (51% versus 20%). About 30% of women with PMS had acne.

Early or limited evidence 100 women with PMS and 50 healthy women as controls

What they did

They studied 100 women with PMS and 50 healthy women without PMS symptoms. They asked them about 20 PMS symptoms, their jobs, marital status, and whether they had skin problems like acne.

What they found

Most women in both groups worked as housewives or in service jobs, and most were in their first marriage. However, more than half of the women with PMS (51%) described their family relationships as bad or difficult, compared to only 20% of healthy women. About 30% of the women with PMS had acne.

What it means for you

Difficult family relationships were more common in women with PMS, and skin problems like acne may be connected to PMS. The main limitation is that the study was done in one location and how women were selected is unclear, so results may not apply to all women.
