Survey study, 2022

How common are PMS and menstrual problems in women on kidney dialysis?

Very common. 70% had PMS and 58% had dysmenorrhea. Several medical factors including hypertension, autoimmune disease, and hepatitis C infection increased risk.

Moderate study design 472 women aged 15-50 with kidney disease on hemodialysis in Egypt

What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 472 women aged 15-50 with kidney disease on hemodialysis at 35 centers in Egypt. Menstrual health assessed by questionnaire and verified through medical records review.

What they found

32.6% had amenorrhea (absent periods), 37% of menstruating women had irregular periods, 70% had PMS, and 58% had dysmenorrhea. PMS was more common in women with hypertension or certain causes of kidney disease. Dysmenorrhea was more common in women with autoimmune disease, hepatitis C infection, or who started dialysis after age 30.

What it means for you

Kidney disease requiring dialysis causes very high rates of PMS and dysmenorrhea. Several medical factors increase risk. Treating the underlying kidney disease or managing these medical conditions might help. This is a cross-sectional study from Egypt, so findings may not apply to all populations.
