Survey study, 2023
Is PMS linked to poor sleep and negative feelings about menstruation?
Yes, worse PMS symptoms are strongly linked to poorer sleep quality and more negative attitudes toward menstruation.
What they did
Researchers surveyed medical students and asked them about their PMS symptoms, sleep quality, and attitudes toward menstruation using validated questionnaires.
What they found
There was a strong positive correlation between PMS symptom severity and poor sleep quality (correlation of 0.894, p less than 0.001). There was a strong negative correlation between PMS symptoms and positive attitudes toward menstruation (correlation of minus 0.807, p less than 0.001).
What it means for you
Women with PMS tend to sleep poorly and have more negative feelings about their periods. However, this was a small survey at a single location, so we cannot determine whether poor sleep causes PMS, PMS causes poor sleep, or both are caused by something else.
