What behavioral symptoms of premenstrual syndrome are most common?

Most women studied (519 out of 650) experienced at least one premenstrual symptom, with insomnia, confusion, difficulty concentrating, and avoiding social situations being most common. These behavioral symptoms were the top concerns for women with PMS.

Moderate study design 650 women of reproductive age in Parangipettai town, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, India

What they did

Researchers surveyed 650 women of reproductive age in a town in Tamil Nadu, India using a standardized questionnaire to identify what premenstrual symptoms they experienced. They used cluster sampling to select participants.

What they found

519 of the 650 women experienced at least one premenstrual symptom. The most frequently reported behavioral symptoms were insomnia, confusion, difficulty concentrating, and avoiding social situations. Insomnia and disorientation were identified as the top concerns among women with PMS.

What it means for you

Behavioral and mood symptoms like sleep problems, confusion, and difficulty with concentration are very common in PMS. This helps women recognize which symptoms to watch for and discuss with a doctor. The main limitation is that this was a one-time survey in one region of India, so results may not apply to other populations, and there was no comparison group.
