Is there a good way to measure menstrual symptoms in teenage girls?

Yes. Researchers developed a 12-item scale to measure menstrual symptoms in teenage girls. When different people used it to rate responses, they showed very strong agreement.

Early or limited evidence 253 teenage girls in schools in Wardha, India

What they did

Researchers created a 12-item questionnaire to measure menstrual symptoms in teenage girls. They tested it with 253 girls in schools in Wardha, India. The scale covers negative feelings, activity changes, physical symptoms, mood changes, concentration, water retention, and PMDD.

What they found

When two independent raters assessed responses using the scale, they showed very strong agreement on all areas. Agreement levels were: physical symptoms (0.998), emotional symptoms (0.987), concentration and behavior (0.95), negative symptoms (0.962), PMDD (0.997), and combined symptoms (0.996).

What it means for you

This scale appears reliable for measuring menstrual symptoms in teenage girls. Different raters get similar results, meaning the tool is dependable. However, researchers need to test it with girls of different ages.
