Does mindfulness training reduce PMS symptoms in young women?

Yes, significantly. Mindfulness training reduced total physical, behavioral, and psychological PMS symptoms from 77.1 to 45.6.

Early or limited evidence 84 young women at a gynecology clinic in Sohag, Egypt

What they did

Quasi-experimental one-group pre-post study of 84 young women at a gynecology clinic in Egypt. Participants completed structured interviews, a modified PMS screening tool, and mindfulness questionnaire before and after mindfulness training.

What they found

PMS symptom scores decreased from 77.1±9.6 before training to 45.6±9.4 after training, a substantial reduction. Mindfulness scores increased significantly from 130.9±9.3 to 169.6±16.5. Improvements covered physical, behavioral, and psychological symptoms.

What it means for you

Mindfulness training appeared to substantially reduce PMS symptoms and increase mindfulness skills. Main limitation: no control group and no comparison to other treatments, so we cannot be certain mindfulness itself caused the improvement rather than placebo. Single clinic in one country.
