Randomised trial, 2017
Does cognitive-behavioral therapy reduce premenstrual syndrome symptoms?
Yes, cognitive-behavioral therapy significantly reduced PMS symptoms, especially for women who completed the full treatment.
What they did
56 Iranian women with PMS were randomly divided into treatment and control groups of 28 each. The treatment group received 10 sessions of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Both groups completed questionnaires before and after to measure PMS symptoms. Researchers also tracked how well women completed the therapy.
What they found
Cognitive-behavioral therapy significantly reduced PMS symptoms compared to control. The therapy was more effective for women who attended and completed all sessions.
What it means for you
CBT may help reduce PMS symptoms but only if women complete all sessions. Results are from one small study in Iran, so findings may not apply to all women everywhere.
