Does Jingqianshu granule affect estrogen receptor activity in the brain?
In rats with PMS-like symptoms, Jingqianshu granule (a Chinese herbal medicine) reduced estrogen receptor gene activity in the brain and brought levels back to normal. This was not tested in women.
What they did
Researchers created PMS-like symptoms in female rats using emotional stress, then gave some rats Jingqianshu granule. They measured the activity of two estrogen receptor genes (ER-alpha and ER-beta) in two brain regions: the hypothalamus and hippocampus.
What they found
Untreated rats with PMS had clearly increased estrogen receptor gene activity compared to control rats. Rats given the granule showed clearly decreased activity compared to untreated PMS rats and were similar to control rats.
What it means for you
The herbal medicine appears to help with PMS symptoms by normalizing estrogen receptor activity in the brain. The main limitation is that this was studied only in rats, not in women.
