Does online yoga help reduce PMS symptoms in working women?
Online yoga reduced 11 of 14 PMS symptoms in working women after 12 weeks. The study had a control group and decent sample size, but participants recruited through social media and the study was not randomized, so we have moderate confidence in these results.
What they did
Nonrandomized controlled trial. 76 employed women aged 23-38 in Mumbai and Delhi, recruited through social media. The intervention group (40 women) received online yoga sessions 5 days per week for 12 weeks, each session lasting 18-24 minutes. The control group (36 women) did not do yoga. PMS symptoms were measured before and after using a standard questionnaire.
What they found
The yoga group showed improvements in 11 of the 14 PMS symptoms including emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms. The control group showed no changes in PMS symptoms before and after the study.
What it means for you
Online yoga may help reduce most PMS symptoms in working women and appears practical since it can be done at home. However, the study was not randomized, was limited to women in India, recruited through social media which may select women already interested in wellness, and measured symptoms by self-report, so results may not apply equally to all working women.
