Survey study, 2025
Does iron level change during different phases of the menstrual cycle?
Yes. Iron levels are lower in the follicular phase before ovulation than in the luteal phase after ovulation. This was one school study, so it may not apply to all girls.
What they did
Researchers measured haemoglobin levels (a sign of iron) in school girls during two phases of their menstrual cycle: the follicular phase before ovulation and the luteal phase after ovulation.
What they found
Haemoglobin was 10.80 gm/dL in the follicular phase and 11.98 gm/dL in the luteal phase.
What it means for you
Your iron levels naturally vary during your cycle, being lower before ovulation. Low iron can affect concentration, energy and physical strength. The study only looked at girls from one school in India, so these findings may not apply everywhere.
10.80
