Does homeopathic treatment reduce PMS symptoms?

In this small study, homeopathic treatment was associated with symptom reduction and improved quality of life. However, there was no control group, so we cannot be certain the improvement was due to the treatment rather than placebo effect or natural improvement.

Early or limited evidence 23 women with PMS lasting more than 3 months

What they did

23 women with PMS lasting more than 3 months received individualized homeopathic treatment. Symptom severity was scored on a 0 to 3 scale at baseline and at 3 to 6 months follow-up. Quality of life was also assessed.

What they found

The average symptom score dropped from 13.7 at baseline to 6.3 at follow-up (a decrease of 7.4 points, p<0.0001). Irritability, aggression, and tension fell from 87% of women at baseline to 39.1% at follow-up. Breast tenderness fell from 78.2% to 17.4%. Weight gain and bloating fell from 73.9% to 26.1%. 91.3% of women reported significantly improved quality of life (p<0.0001).

What it means for you

Homeopathic treatment was well-tolerated and appeared to reduce PMS symptoms in this group. However, this was a small case series with no control group, so improvements could be due to placebo effect, natural improvement over time, or other factors unrelated to the treatment.
