Does physical activity and stress affect which type of PMS a teenager gets?
Yes. Stress was linked to different types of PMS, but physical activity was not. However, the study only looked at one moment in time, so we cannot be sure stress causes different PMS types.
What they did
Cross-sectional study of 87 teenage girls at a school in Indonesia. Girls completed questionnaires about stress and physical activity levels. Researchers used chi-square statistical tests to look for connections between these factors and PMS type.
What they found
Type A (Anxiety) PMS was most common at 34.5%, followed by Type D (Depression) at 33.3%. 72.4% had light physical activity. 71.3% experienced stress. Stress showed a link to PMS type (p=0.034), but physical activity did not (p=0.609).
What it means for you
In this group, girls with stress appeared more likely to have anxiety or depression-type PMS. However, the study was relatively small and only looked at one moment in time. We cannot be sure that stress causes different PMS types or what other factors might matter.
