Does knowing more about menstruation help girls avoid or reduce premenstrual syndrome?
Girls with less knowledge about menstruation are more likely to experience PMS symptoms. We cannot be sure whether better knowledge prevents PMS or whether girls with PMS are less likely to learn about menstruation.
What they did
Researchers studied 61 junior high school girls in Bali, Indonesia. They measured girls' knowledge about menstruation and asked about their experience of PMS symptoms.
What they found
59% of the girls (36 out of 61) had less knowledge about menstruation, and 59% reported experiencing PMS symptoms. Girls with less knowledge about menstruation were more likely to experience PMS.
What it means for you
Learning more about how menstruation works might help reduce PMS symptoms. However, this was a small study in one school in Indonesia, and we cannot determine whether better knowledge prevents PMS or whether other factors link them together.
