Survey study, 2022

Is prostaglandin (a body chemical) linked to PMS in teenage girls?

Yes. Prostaglandin F2α levels were linked to PMS severity in this study of 50 students. However, the study was small and only looked at one moment in time, so we do not know whether measuring this chemical helps us understand or treat PMS.

Early or limited evidence 50 nursing students at a midwifery academy in Makassar, Indonesia

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 50 nursing students in Indonesia. Researchers collected daily symptom notes and questionnaires about PMS. They measured prostaglandin F2α levels in blood using a laboratory test kit and used chi-square testing to look for connections.

What they found

26 girls with mild PMS: 23 (46%) had prostaglandin F2α levels of 420.6 pg/mL. 24 girls with severe PMS: 15 (30%) had prostaglandin F2α levels of 420.6 pg/mL. Prostaglandin levels were significantly linked to PMS severity (p=0.047).

What it means for you

This study found a link between a body chemical (prostaglandin F2α) and PMS severity, which makes biological sense since prostaglandins affect the uterus. However, the study was small and took only a snapshot in time. It is unclear whether this finding means we could measure prostaglandins to diagnose PMS or treat it more effectively.
