Survey study, 2021

Do PMS symptoms make multiple sclerosis symptoms worse?

Yes. Multiple sclerosis symptoms got worse during the premenstrual period, especially pain and fatigue. But this very small study needs to be confirmed with larger research.

Early or limited evidence 40 women aged 20-35 with multiple sclerosis and PMS, BMI less than 30, from El-Dokki, Egypt

What they did

Cross-sectional comparative study of 40 women with multiple sclerosis and PMS (aged 20-35, BMI less than 30). Assessed them on normal menstrual days and premenstrual days using symptom severity scales and pain scales.

What they found

During premenstrual period: functional system score increased significantly (p=0.006), fatigue severity scale increased significantly (p=0.0001), pain intensity increased significantly (p=0.0001).

What it means for you

Women with multiple sclerosis should know symptoms may worsen before their period, especially pain and fatigue. Very limited because only 40 women in one location, so larger research needed.
