Does the menstrual cycle phase affect blood loss during lipoabdominoplasty surgery?
No. Blood loss during lipoabdominoplasty was the same regardless of which phase of the menstrual cycle women were in during surgery.
What they did
A prospective controlled study of 90 women aged 18-55 with regular menstrual cycles who underwent lipoabdominoplasty between January 2022 and January 2025. Women were grouped by cycle phase: perimenstrual (days 1-7, 21-28), periovulatory (days 8-14), or luteal (days 15-20). Blood loss was measured during and after surgery.
What they found
Intraoperative blood loss was 480±110 mL (perimenstrual), 460±105 mL (periovulatory), 455±115 mL (luteal) with p=0.62 (not significantly different). Postoperative drainage was similar (p=0.78). Hemoglobin decline, drain removal time, and complication rates were comparable (seroma 6%, hematoma 4%, transfusion 1%). BMI and excised tissue weight predicted blood loss, not menstrual phase.
What it means for you
Surgical scheduling for lipoabdominoplasty does not need to be adjusted based on menstrual cycle timing. Main limitation: single-center study with 90 women, so findings should be confirmed in larger studies.
