Does olanzapine help premenstrual psychosis?

One girl with recurrent premenstrual psychosis was successfully treated with olanzapine. This is one case of a very rare condition, so we need much more research.

Early or limited evidence One 17-year-old girl with recurrent premenstrual psychosis

What they did

Doctors treated one 17-year-old girl who had psychotic episodes (hallucinations or delusions) that happened before her period each month. They gave her olanzapine, an antipsychotic medication.

What they found

She was successfully treated with olanzapine (20 mg/day). Her psychotic symptoms resolved.

What it means for you

This is one girl's experience. Premenstrual psychosis is very rare and we don't understand what causes it. It might actually be related to bipolar disorder or schizophrenia rather than a separate condition. This case suggests antipsychotics might help, but much more research is needed.
