Study, 2011

Does taking vitex help reduce PMS symptoms in teenage girls?

Yes. In this study, 44.4% of the girls had no PMS complaints at all after 3 months of treatment, and another 28.8% had a reduction of all their PMS symptoms.

Early or limited evidence 45 teenage girls aged 14 to 16

What they did

Forty-five teenage girls aged 14 to 16 were given vitex (Femicur N). The first group of 23 girls took 4 mg once daily for 3 months. The second group of 22 girls took 40 mg twice daily from the 19th day of their cycle for 10 days, repeated for 3 months.

What they found

After 3 months of treatment, 20 girls (44.4%) had no PMS complaints at all. Another 13 girls (28.8%) had a reduction of all PMS symptoms. For breast tenderness, 13 girls (28.8%) had it disappear completely, and 4 girls (8.8%) had reduced complaints.

What it means for you

Vitex appears to help many teenage girls with PMS, and breast tenderness may be particularly responsive to treatment. The main limits are that this is a small study with no comparison group, so we cannot be certain how much of the improvement came from the vitex rather than other factors like time passing or placebo effect.
