Does study pressure affect depression during the premenstrual phase?

The study found no clear difference in depression levels during the premenstrual phase between medical students (high study pressure) and economics students (lower study pressure).

Early or limited evidence 26 medical students and 16 economics students from Lambung Mangkurat University

What they did

26 medical students and 16 economics students from one university were assessed during their premenstrual phase for depression levels. The results were compared between the two groups.

What they found

84.62% of medical students had mild depression during the premenstrual phase. Among economics students, 9 had mild depression and 4 (25%) had moderate depression. There was no clear difference in depression levels between the two groups.

What it means for you

Medical students did not show more depression in the premenstrual phase than economics students, despite facing more study pressure. This suggests that study load alone may not explain premenstrual depression. The main limitations are the small sample size and this study only looked at students at one university.
