Study, 2003
Do skin flares get worse before your period if you have atopic dermatitis?
Yes. About half of women with atopic dermatitis have monthly skin worsening, mostly before their period. All women with premenstrual skin flares also had premenstrual syndrome symptoms.
What they did
Researchers interviewed 286 Japanese women with atopic dermatitis. They asked about monthly skin worsening related to their menstrual cycle and about premenstrual syndrome symptoms.
What they found
Of the 286 women, 134 (47%) had monthly skin worsening, most of which occurred in the week before their period. Severity of the worsening varied among women. All women with premenstrual skin worsening also had premenstrual syndrome symptoms.
What it means for you
If you have atopic dermatitis and your skin gets worse before your period, this is normal for about half of women with this condition. The skin flares are connected to premenstrual syndrome symptoms. This study was based on interviews rather than controlled testing, and only included Japanese women.
