How common is PMDD among medical and dental students?
About 7.27% of female medical students had PMDD, while 75.7% had some premenstrual symptoms. Many men did not know about PMDD.
What they did
Cross-sectional study from January to June 2023 of 173 medical and dental students (165 female, mean age 21.45 years) in Lahore, Pakistan. Female students completed a screening questionnaire for PMDD.
What they found
12 out of 165 female students (7.27%) met PMDD criteria. 125 (75.7%) had some premenstrual symptoms. More females knew about PMDD (74.5%) than males (30.4%).
What it means for you
PMDD is not as common in this student group as some form of premenstrual symptoms, but awareness gaps remain, especially among men. Results are limited to one city in Pakistan and student populations.
