Survey study, 2025

How common is PMDD among female medical students in Vietnam?

PMDD affects 4.2% of female medical students at this university. The study also found that menstrual cycle length, regularity, electronics use, and alcohol drinking are linked to PMDD.

Moderate study design 477 female students at Buon Ma Thuot Medical University in Vietnam

What they did

Researchers surveyed 477 female students using a standardized PMDD screening tool and gathered information about their menstrual cycles, electronics use, and alcohol consumption.

What they found

4.2% of the students had PMDD. Statistically significant associations were found between PMDD and longer or irregular menstrual cycles, higher electronic device usage time, and certain alcohol consumption habits.

What it means for you

PMDD occurs in a small but meaningful proportion of young women. The associations with electronics and alcohol suggest these factors may be involved, but the study cannot prove cause and effect. Results are from one medical school in Vietnam and may not apply to other locations or populations.
