How common is PMDD in East Asian countries?

PMDD appears less common in East Asia (1.3-2.8%) than in Western countries (3-8%), though the reasons are not yet clear.

Early or limited evidence Published literature on PMDD in East Asian countries

What they did

Literature review of published studies on PMDD in Taiwan, China including Hong Kong and Macau, Japan, and Korea using PubMed and Chinese databases.

What they found

Found 17 articles about PMDD in East Asian countries (3 were excluded). PMDD rates in East Asia range from 1.3-2.8% compared to 3-8% in Western literature. Risk factors were mostly similar between East and West. Limited treatment studies in East Asia showed positive results.

What it means for you

PMDD might be genuinely less common in East Asia or might be diagnosed differently there. Not enough treatment research has been done in East Asia. This is a review of other studies, not new research.
