Does an online peer support community help women with PMDD?

Yes, probably. Women who joined r/PMDD showed a clear decrease in linking PMDD to depression and anxiety. The community seems to help them understand PMDD separately. However, this is based on analyzing discussions, not a controlled study, so we cannot be certain it caused these changes.

Moderate study design 17,332 active participants in r/PMDD Reddit community over a 12-year period (2012-2024)

What they did

Researchers studied r/PMDD, a Reddit community with 17,332 participants, over 12 years (2012-2024). They looked at what people discussed in this PMDD community and compared it to discussions in 112 other mental health communities. They tracked changes in how individual users talked about their condition before and after joining r/PMDD.

What they found

After women joined r/PMDD, they showed a substantial decrease in connecting PMDD with depression and anxiety in their discussions. People in the community discussed both physical and psychological symptoms that matched PMDD diagnostic criteria, though people's experiences varied widely. The three most discussed treatments were SSRI antidepressants, birth control, and complementary medicine. These three types were discussed separately, with people tending to focus on one type rather than combining them. People discussing SSRIs were more active in other mental health communities than people discussing birth control.

What it means for you

Online peer support communities like r/PMDD may help women understand PMDD as its own condition, separate from depression and anxiety. They provide a space to discuss different treatment options. However, this is based on analyzing online discussions, not a controlled comparison, so we cannot be certain how much the community actually helps or whether other factors play a role.
