Survey study, 2021
How common is PMS among nurses and does it affect their job performance?
Just over half of nurses (52.0%) had PMS. Those with PMS had significantly worse daily job performance. The evidence is clear, but the study only looked at nurses in one location in Saudi Arabia.
What they did
Cross-sectional study of 310 nurses at a maternity hospital and health centers in Saudi Arabia from January to February 2019, using a PMS scale questionnaire.
What they found
52.0% of nurses had PMS, with an average score of 114±32. Those with PMS had significantly worse daily work performance (p<0.0001). PMS was more common in younger nurses and those experiencing period pain.
What it means for you
PMS is common among nurses and clearly harms their ability to work. The main limit is that the study only included nurses in one city in Saudi Arabia at one time point, so findings may not apply elsewhere.
