Case-control study, 1990
Do women with PMS have different ANP hormone levels during their cycle?
Yes. Women with PMS have consistently lower ANP levels throughout their cycle, especially during the luteal phase, while women without PMS show no cycle-related changes.
What they did
Case-control study measuring ANP hormone concentrations using radioimmunoassay in 11 women with PMS and 12 without across different menstrual cycle phases.
What they found
Control women showed no change in ANP across the menstrual cycle. Women with PMS showed a significant drop in ANP in the mid-luteal phase compared to the follicular phase. Throughout the cycle, PMS women had lower ANP than controls, with statistically significant differences in the early, mid, and late luteal phases.
What it means for you
Women with PMS may have a biological difference in a hormone involved in fluid and sodium regulation. The lower ANP levels might reflect changes in blood volume or body sodium. This was a small study looking at one specific hormone, so practical significance is unclear.
