Study, 2021
Does soy isoflavones help reduce PMS symptoms?
Yes. A randomized controlled study found that soy isoflavones clearly helped reduce both mood symptoms and pain compared to a control group.
What they did
Two hundred women with PMS symptoms were randomly assigned to receive either soy isoflavones or a control treatment in a prospective study at a gynecology clinic in Egypt.
What they found
There was a clear difference between the soy isoflavones group and the control group for behavioral and mood symptoms. There was also a clear difference for pain symptoms. Soy isoflavones improved perimenstrual symptoms overall.
What it means for you
Soy isoflavones may help reduce PMS symptoms, especially mood changes and pain. A randomized controlled study is stronger evidence than other study types. However, the study does not specify how much the symptoms improved or how long the improvement lasted.
