Survey study, 2016
Does PMDD cause sleep problems?
Yes. Women with PMDD have significantly worse sleep quality than those without, with 80.5% reporting poor sleep compared to 56.4% without PMDD.
What they did
A survey of female university students aged 18-30. They screened for PMDD using an 18-item diagnostic scale. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
What they found
PMDD affected 25.5% of the students. Among those with PMDD, 80.5% had poor sleep (PSQI score above 5), compared to 56.4% without PMDD. The difference was statistically significant.
What it means for you
PMDD clearly disrupts sleep. Because this study looked at one point in time only, we cannot confirm PMDD causes the sleep problems or something else does.
