Survey study, 2008
Does smoking cause menstrual problems?
Yes, in this study. Smoking women had higher rates of menstrual problems including painful periods, sore breasts, and mood changes before their period.
What they did
Researchers gave 107 women at a women's clinic in Lebanon a questionnaire about smoking habits, menstrual symptoms, and other health information.
What they found
36.05% of women smoked and 63.95% did not. Smoking women had a higher rate of menstrual disorders. The most common symptoms were painful periods, sore breasts, and mood changes before their period. The number of menstrual problems did not depend on how much women smoked or how long they had been smoking.
What it means for you
Smoking appears to increase menstrual problems in this Lebanese clinic population. However, the study is small and limited to one clinic, so findings may not apply to all women.
