Survey study, 2018
How aware are college women of PMS and related menstrual conditions?
Most women experience menstrual symptoms but lack knowledge about them. Over 60% did not know about PMS, severe PMS (PMDD), or dysmenorrhea.
What they did
Surveyed 115 female college students at a physiotherapy department using a standard rating scale for severe PMS and a questionnaire about menstrual symptoms and daily habits.
What they found
84% had symptoms before their period. 22.5% had irregular menstrual cycles. 53.2% took painkillers during their period. Over 60% of students said they did not know about dysmenorrhea, PMS, or PMDD.
What it means for you
Most students experience menstrual problems but do not understand what they are. More education about these conditions is needed. The study was from one university in Japan and may not apply elsewhere.
