Randomised trial, 2001
Does lisuride maleate help premenstrual breast pain?
Yes. Lisuride maleate significantly reduced premenstrual breast pain compared to placebo, with no significant side effects reported.
What they did
A double-blind study where 60 women with premenstrual breast pain took either 0.2 mg of lisuride maleate or placebo daily for 2 months. Breast pain was measured on a pain scale.
What they found
Women taking lisuride had much less breast pain than those on placebo. Prolactin levels (a hormone) dropped in the lisuride group and correlated with pain relief.
What it means for you
This drug may help with breast pain before your period. The study was small with only 30 women per group, so larger studies are needed to confirm it works.
