What affects sleep quality in nursing students?

Several factors affect sleep quality: perceived mental health, PMS symptoms, perceived stress, and psychological well-being. Together, these explained about half the differences in how well students slept.

Moderate study design 253 nursing students

What they did

Researchers surveyed 253 nursing students from May to August 2024 about their PMS symptoms, stress levels, psychological well-being, and sleep quality using questionnaires.

What they found

Overall, nursing students had above-average sleep quality. Sleep quality varied depending on smoking status and perceived mental health. Four factors influenced sleep quality: perceived mental health, PMS symptoms, perceived stress, and psychological well-being. These four factors together explained 48.3% of the differences in sleep quality.

What it means for you

The study identifies several factors related to sleep quality in nursing students. This suggests that reducing PMS and stress while improving well-being might help improve sleep. Because this is a cross-sectional study, we cannot determine cause and effect. Results apply only to nursing students.
