Does the menstrual cycle affect balance and dizziness?

Objective balance tests showed no clear change during the menstrual cycle. However, women reported more dizziness and anxiety before menstruation.

Early or limited evidence 40 healthy women aged 18-40 without balance or hearing complaints

What they did

40 healthy women aged 18-40 underwent balance tests and mood assessments before and after menstruation. Tests included both objective measurements and subjective reports of dizziness and mood.

What they found

Objective balance tests showed no clear difference before and after menstruation. However, women's reports of dizziness and anxiety scores were higher before menstruation compared to after.

What it means for you

The menstrual cycle may affect how dizzy and anxious women feel before their period, even though objective physical tests show no changes. This means the dizziness is real but may not be caused by changes in the balance system itself. The main limitation is that only healthy women without complaints were studied.
