Survey study, 2021

Does cognitive-behavioral emotional regulation training help women with PMDD?

Yes. Training significantly improved marital happiness and emotional regulation in women with PMDD. This was a small study with a control group, so the effect is promising but needs confirmation in larger studies.

Moderate study design 30 women with PMDD symptoms at a hospital in Shahrood, Iran

What they did

Semi-experimental study with pre-test/post-test design. 30 women with PMDD were split into experimental (15) and control (15) groups. The experimental group received 12 weekly sessions of 90-minute cognitive-behavioral emotion regulation training. Both groups completed questionnaires about marital happiness and emotional regulation before and after.

What they found

Cognitive-behavioral training significantly improved marital happiness and cognitive emotional regulation in the experimental group compared to control (P<0.05). The control group showed no such improvement.

What it means for you

Cognitive-behavioral training may help women with PMDD improve emotional regulation and relationship satisfaction. This is a promising result but the study is small and limited to one hospital in Iran. Longer-term effects are unknown.
