Survey study, 2019
Does the age when a girl starts her period relate to PMS and body measurements?
Yes. Age at menarche was linked to weight, height, and PMS severity. This suggests physical health and nutrition may influence PMS.
What they did
A descriptive study of 300 high school girls in Zahedan, Iran (2017). Researchers recorded height, weight, and other measurements, then asked about PMS symptoms using a standard questionnaire.
What they found
73.7% of girls (221 of 300) had PMS. Age at menarche significantly correlated with weight (P=0.004) and height (P=0.025). Girls with mild and severe PMS differed significantly in age at menarche (P=0.03).
What it means for you
Most high school girls experience PMS. Physical health and nutrition may influence severity. This was a descriptive study in one location only, so we cannot prove cause and effect.
