Survey study, 2020

Does magnesium with vitamin B help PMS symptoms?

Yes. Magnesium citrate with vitamin B2 significantly decreased several PMS symptoms including anxiety, depression, resentment, tearfulness, and headache. However, blood magnesium levels did not change significantly.

Early or limited evidence 65 women with premenstrual syndrome

What they did

65 women with PMS were divided into two groups. Group 1 (32 women) received magnesium citrate with vitamin B2 for 2 months. Group 2 (33 women) received only vitamin B2 for 2 months, and when that was ineffective, magnesium citrate was added.

What they found

Group 1 had significant decreases in the overall number of PMS symptoms. When both groups received magnesium citrate (Group 1 from the start, Group 2 after 2 months), specific symptoms significantly decreased: anxiety, depression, resentment, tearfulness, and headache. Other PMS symptoms decreased but not significantly. Blood magnesium levels did not change significantly.

What it means for you

Magnesium with B2 may help several emotional and stress-related PMS symptoms. The study is small with no true control group, since the second group eventually received the same treatment. We cannot tell if magnesium itself works or if it's the combination with B2.
