Does Kamikihito herbal medicine help PMS and menstrual pain?

Three women with PMS, menstrual pain, and sleep problems improved when treated with Kamikihito, a Japanese herbal medicine. However, this is just three cases without comparison to other treatments, so we cannot say whether the medicine or other factors caused the improvement.

Early or limited evidence 3 women with PMS and menstrual pain (ages 26, 38, and 31)

What they did

Reported on three women treated with Kamikihito, a Japanese herbal medicine made from another herbal formula plus two additional herbs. The women had PMS, menstrual pain, fatigue, insomnia, and depression or similar mood symptoms.

What they found

Woman 1, age 26, had premenstrual irritability, breast pain, menstrual pain, fatigue, and insomnia. After treatment, insomnia and fatigue improved, and PMS and menstrual pain improved. Woman 2, age 38, had fatigue, insomnia, and premenstrual irritability. After treatment, fatigue improved and PMS and menstrual pain improved. Woman 3, age 31, had fatigue, insomnia, depression, repeated bladder infections, and PMS. After treatment, PMS and menstrual pain improved and bladder infections stopped.

What it means for you

These three cases suggest Kamikihito might help PMS and menstrual pain, especially in women with fatigue and sleep problems. However, without studying more women or comparing to other treatments, we cannot know whether the medicine worked or if improvement came from other reasons.
