How do pre-menstrual symptoms affect the work and social life of young women?
Pre-menstrual symptoms affect 51.3% of women aged 15-35 with mild-to-moderate PMS and 7.5% with PMDD, significantly disrupting work and social activities. The severity of symptoms directly predicts how much they interfere with daily life.
What they did
Cross-sectional survey of 306 women aged 15-35 in Pune, India using the Pre-menstrual Symptoms Screening Tool and a structured questionnaire about lifestyle factors including stress, diet, sleep, and physical activity.
What they found
51.3% (157 women) experienced mild-to-moderate PMS and 7.5% (23 women) met criteria for PMDD. The most frequent symptoms were fatigue (98.1%), irritability/anger (96.2%), and decreased interest in home, work, or social activities. PMS severity was significantly associated with work impairment (p<0.001) and social-life interference (p<0.0007).
What it means for you
PMS is very common and strongly linked to work and social problems. The study shows lifestyle factors like stress and sleep are associated with PMS severity, suggesting these can be addressed to improve symptoms. The study was limited to one city in India.
