Are stress, obesity, and lack of exercise related to PMS in teenage girls?
Yes. The study found a clear relationship between all three factors and PMS. Girls with stress, obesity, and irregular exercise habits were more likely to have PMS.
What they did
Cross-sectional study of 63 teenage girls at a middle school in Indonesia. They measured stress, weight status, exercise habits, and PMS symptoms using questionnaires.
What they found
57.1% of girls did not have PMS, 65.1% had no stress, 74.6% were not obese, and 54.0% did not exercise regularly. Girls with stress, obesity, and irregular exercise habits all showed a clear relationship with having PMS.
What it means for you
This suggests that stress, obesity, and lack of exercise are connected to PMS in teenage girls. Lifestyle changes like regular exercise, stress reduction, and good sleep may help prevent or reduce PMS. The main limits are that this is cross-sectional, so cause and effect are unclear, and the sample is small and from one school in Indonesia.
