What factors are linked to PMS in young women?

Stress, diet, and exercise were linked to PMS. Age of first period and body weight were not linked in this village study.

Early or limited evidence 195 young women in Indonesia

What they did

Cross-sectional study of all 195 young women in one village in Indonesia (2017). Participants completed questionnaires about stress, diet, exercise, age of first period, body weight, and PMS. Researchers used univariate and bivariate analysis.

What they found

65.5% experienced stress. 65.5% had good diet patterns. 65.5% exercised regularly. 57.1% had normal age of first period. 56.0% had normal body weight. 65.5% had PMS. Stress, diet, and exercise were related to PMS (p=0.000). Age of first period (p=0.635) and body weight (p=0.076) were not related to PMS.

What it means for you

This suggests stress, poor diet, and lack of exercise may be linked to PMS while age of first period and body weight may not matter. The study was from one village, so results may not apply to other areas or countries.
