Cohort study, 2001
Do women with PMDD have weaker bones?
No, women with PMDD have normal bone density for their age, no different from women without PMDD.
What they did
Researchers measured bone density at three locations (lower spine and hip) in 20 women with PMDD and 18 women without PMDD using x-ray imaging.
What they found
Both groups had bone density as expected for their age and sex. The PMDD and control groups did not differ in bone density or Z scores at any of the three sites studied.
What it means for you
This study found no evidence that PMDD increases osteoporosis risk. However, the study is very small, so larger studies are needed to confirm this finding.
