Survey study, 2017
How many adolescent girls have PMS and how severe is it?
Most adolescent girls have some PMS: more than half (55%) have moderate symptoms and 19% have severe symptoms.
What they did
Cross-sectional study of 100 nursing students in India. Researchers asked about PMS symptoms using a questionnaire and rated the severity level.
What they found
26% had mild PMS, 55% had moderate PMS, and 19% had severe PMS. The severity of PMS did not relate to demographic variables like age or socioeconomic status.
What it means for you
PMS affects three-quarters of adolescent girls but the study doesn't explain why some get severe symptoms and others mild ones. Results only apply to a single nursing college.
