Survey study, 2013

Is a daily symptom tracker reliable for measuring PMS in Chinese women?

Yes. The Daily Record of Severity of Problems showed good reliability and validity for tracking PMS symptoms in Chinese women, with stable measurements across two cycles.

Early or limited evidence 126 female nursing students in China

What they did

Validation study of a daily symptom tracking tool in China. 126 female nursing students completed daily ratings of their symptoms for 2 menstrual cycles, plus standard PMS and depression rating scales.

What they found

The daily symptom tracker showed high internal consistency and good test-retest reliability across the two cycles. Symptoms clustered into four main categories: mood, behaviour, pain, and physical symptoms. The tracker's results showed moderate correlations with established PMS and depression rating scales.

What it means for you

This daily tracking tool can reliably measure PMS symptoms in Chinese women and may be useful for diagnosis and research. The main limitation is the small, convenience sample of nursing students, so results may not represent all Chinese women.
