Case-control study, 1984
Do women with severe PMS have different hormone patterns than women without PMS?
No. There was no relationship between the hormone patterns tested and PMS symptoms. Hormone levels followed similar patterns in both groups.
What they did
Case-control study measuring three hormones (prolactin, growth hormone, cortisol) every 30 minutes over 24 hours on two different cycle days in 2 women with severe PMS and 2 control women.
What they found
No relationship was found between the hormone secretion patterns and premenstrual tension syndrome symptoms.
What it means for you
These specific hormones do not appear to explain PMS. However, the study was very small with only 2 women in each group, so results may not apply to other women.
