Survey study, 2016

Do relaxation exercises and meditation reduce PMS symptoms and anxiety in girls?

Yes. Girls who did relaxation exercises had clear reductions in anxiety and PMS symptoms compared to girls who did not do the exercises.

Moderate study design 230 girls in Belagavi, India

What they did

Researchers randomly assigned 230 girls in Belagavi, India to either learn relaxation exercises and meditation or to a control group. Girls in the intervention group were taught a relaxation program. Anxiety and PMS symptoms were measured before and after using standard questionnaires.

What they found

Girls who did relaxation exercises had clear reductions in both anxiety and PMS symptoms compared to the control group.

What it means for you

Relaxation exercises and meditation may help reduce both anxiety and PMS symptoms in girls. Because this was a randomized controlled trial, we can be more confident that the exercises caused the improvements. However, the study was done in one school in India, and we don't know how well these results would apply to other countries or older women.
