Does Jingqianshu granules, a Chinese herbal medicine, help PMS symptoms?
Yes, significantly more than placebo over three menstrual cycles, with no serious safety problems reported.
What they did
156 women were randomly assigned to take Jingqianshu granules (104 women) or placebo (52 women) for three menstrual cycles, then followed for three more cycles without treatment. Symptoms were tracked daily.
What they found
After three treatment cycles, symptom scores (DRSP) dropped more in the treatment group than placebo. In the main analysis, scores fell by 14.3 ± 8.85 with granules versus 10.1 ± 7.61 with placebo. In the stricter analysis they fell by 14.5 ± 8.61 versus 10.2 ± 7.13. Both were statistically significant. No serious side effects were reported.
What it means for you
Jingqianshu granules reduced PMS symptoms better than placebo and were safe. This is a useful treatment option for PMS. Limitation: Only studied in China, only tested for a specific type of PMS in Traditional Chinese Medicine terms, and not compared to standard treatments.
