Does eating banana help reduce PMS symptoms?

Yes. Women who ate 100 grams of banana daily for 3 months experienced significant reductions in PMS symptoms compared to those who did not eat banana.

Moderate study design 100 females screened, 60 selected (30 experimental, 30 control) at a nursing college in Andhra Pradesh

What they did

Researchers divided 60 college women into two groups: 30 in an experimental group and 30 in a control group. The experimental group added 100 grams of banana to their daily diet for 3 months (January through March 2019), while the control group continued their regular diet. They measured PMS symptoms before starting and monthly during the 3-month period using questionnaires and rating scales.

What they found

The prevalence of PMS in the overall sample was 50.37 percent. The experimental group showed significant reductions in PMS symptoms after the first, second, and third month of banana consumption (t-values of 6.37, 8.32, and 7.84 respectively). The differences in PMS symptoms between the experimental and control groups were statistically significant at all three post-tests (t-values of 3.59, 9.23, and 9.14 respectively).

What it means for you

Adding banana to your diet may help reduce PMS symptoms over time. This suggests trying 100 grams of banana daily. However, this was a small study at one college in India without randomization, so the findings need to be confirmed in larger studies. The study did not identify which specific symptoms improved.
