Can barley and chrysanthemum extract reduce PMS symptoms?

In laboratory tests and mice, this extract reduced prolactin and inflammation markers, which could help PMS, but human studies have not been done. We cannot say yet whether it works in women.

Early or limited evidence Laboratory cells and mice models (no human participants)

What they did

Laboratory and animal study. Researchers tested barley extract, chrysanthemum extract, and their mixture (Lomens-P0) in cells and in mice with high prolactin levels. They measured prolactin secretion, inflammation markers, and hormone levels.

What they found

Both extracts reduced prolactin secretion and inflammatory markers (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, iNOS, COX-2) in laboratory cells (P < 0.01). In mice with high prolactin, Lomens-P0 suppressed prolactin secretion, normalized sex hormone balance, and significantly reduced inflammatory markers in uterine tissue. The active components were identified as tricin and chlorogenic acid.

What it means for you

This natural mixture might help prevent or treat PMS by lowering prolactin and inflammation. However, these are only laboratory and animal findings. No human studies are presented. We do not know if the extract works in women or at what dose.
