Does acupuncture combined with supplements and meditation help PMS?

A 36-year-old woman with long-standing PMS saw major improvement in her symptoms after combining acupuncture treatments with several supplements and daily meditation. However, this is just one case, so we do not know which parts of the treatment helped most.

Early or limited evidence One 36-year-old woman with PMS since age 18

What they did

A 36-year-old woman who had had PMS since age 18 received 12 acupuncture treatments over three months. She also took daily supplements including coenzyme Q10 (100 mg), B-complex vitamins, magnesium citrate (400 mg), flaxseed oil (1000 mg), and turmeric (1000 mg), with higher doses of some supplements starting five days before her period. She also practiced meditation for ten minutes twice a day.

What they found

Her symptom score dropped from 50 out of 60 to 18 out of 60 after three months of treatment. Her score stayed below 20 for the next 32 weeks.

What it means for you

This shows one woman's strong response to combined treatment, but because there was no control group and it was just one case, we cannot be sure how much each part of the treatment helped or how well it would work for others.
